Arrival in Leogane, Part 1
For the final leg of the journey, the team from Among The Reeds traveled to a community in the hills of Leogane that is the home of Bethel Church. The church itself is home to Bethel School, which is supported by ATR with school books, uniforms, daily meals, teacher salaries and other necessities. I'll talk more about the school in the next post. But the community surrounding the church welcomed our arrival with warmth and kindness, allowing me to meander a bit to prepare my shotlist for the ensuing clinic.
I arrived near lunch time, which was important as I would learn on my 2017 trip a year later. The community had no kitchen and prepared meals outdoors, which itself is quite all right and preferable in many situations. In this case, on the menu was rice and beans, vegetable garnish and some chicken for the adults. And if you've never had Haitian food, you haven't lived. It's delicious.
While lunch was in preparation, the medical and dental teams were setting up the patient areas and pharmacy. The clinic itself was scheduled to begin immediately after the children had received their meals.
