The Road to Les Cayes

We left early in the day in an attempt to arrive in Les Cayes before nightfall.  While it was not a long distance we were traveling, the weather and road conditions were uncertain.  And I felt a sense of urgency from those with whom I traveled, perhaps compounded by the many UN vehicles traveling in the same direction.

While difficult to convey in these images, the standing water at times was nearly a foot deep, and many miles inland from Hurricane Matthew's path.  I took it as a sign of what was to come.   And while my assignment was not to cover the hurricane itself, nor its devastation, both remained inseparable from the narrative, and both lent urgency to our journey's purpose.
