The last call came through. We had heard about the road washout on the main highway, but were told a way forward was possible. And that was that. It was time to load the trucks. We were headed to Les Cayes.
The Among The Reeds team had prepared individual care packages filled with rice, beans, cooking oil, soap and other sundries to give to families attending the ATR free medical clinics over the next two weeks. The first clinic would be held in Les Cayes. The trick now was getting there.
Hurricaine Matthew devistated much of Haiti’s lower peninsula, with the town of Les Anglais (located on the southern tip of the lower peninsula) being the first hit on October 3rd, 2016, followed by the city of Jérémie (located on the northern tip of the lower peninsula) soon after. Much of the news coverage in the States was of Jérémie, which was all but lost to the hurricane. Les Cayes is located about 95 kilometers southeast of Jérémie on the southern coast of the lower peninsula. So many lost everything. And while immediate aide was needed everywhere, it was a church in Les Cayes that made the call to allow ATR to setup a 2-day mobile clinic for their community. And so we packed up and rolled out.
