Croix-des-Bouquets Medical Clinic, Part 5
This was the last day of the Among The Reeds free medical clinic in Croix-des-Bouquets in 2016, and it ended with a feeling of both accomplishment and an overwhelming sense of the vastness of the needs that could not be directly treated without ongoing care and specialized equipment. Nonetheless, approximately 800 people received individual attention from a medical practitioner and left with multivitamins, medications, eyeglasses and emergency food and sundries. But more than this, they left with the knowledge that their lives mattered and that Among The Reeds would return to follow up with them the following year.
In the end, the experience would be short lived and the townspeople would go back to their lives with no further support from other medical providers nor their own government. Truly, they would be on their own—a reality that's very difficult to describe to those whom have never left the United States, and a harsh reality for those whom endure it everyday. The most they would hope for is another organization reaching out in the intervening months before Among The Reeds would return once again.
